After the events of the first half, the various factions of the Seven Kingdoms continue struggling for power while the threat of winter grows. Jon Snow faces increasing pressure at the Wall as tensions between the Night’s Watch and the wildlings threaten to explode. Daenerys Targaryen, meanwhile, struggles to maintain control in Meereen while enemies gather around her and the fate of her dragons becomes increasingly important.

In the North, Stannis Baratheon prepares to challenge the while Theon Greyjoy is drawn back into the Stark–Bolton conflict after his brutal captivity. Tyrion Lannister, traveling through Essos, becomes entangled with forces seeking to reach Daenerys.

The latter part of the novel builds toward several major confrontations. Alliances shift, armies move, and characters make increasingly desperate choices. The story ends on a series of dramatic cliffhangers involving Jon, Daenerys, Stannis, Tyrion, and the political struggle in Westeros, leaving several major storylines unresolved for the next book, The Winds of Winter.
